Moscow`s mayor returns from vacation
Moscow`s Mayor Yury Luzhkov who has recently come under attack by Russia`s state-run media, returned on Sunday from his Austrian vacation, Ekho Moskvy radio station said.
Luzhkov, who has just turned 74, left Moscow for Austria on vacation on September 19 amid a media campaign against him and his billionaire wife, Yelena Baturina.
National TV channels have accused Luzhkov of corruption and indifference to the plight of Moscow during the summer smog. Earlier this month, a documentary aired by the NTV TV channel said Luzhkov`s wife, the world`s third richest woman, had used her husband`s position to amass her alleged $2.9 billion wealth.
Luzhkov`s press secretary Sergey Tsoi said the mayor would take part in an opening ceremony of the UNESCO International Conference in Moscow on Monday.
The Moscow mayor is allegedly at odds with President Dmitry Medvedev. Their conflict is thought to have its roots in a September article by Luzhkov in the Rossiiskaya Gazeta government daily that hinted at criticism of the Medvedev-Putin leadership tandem.
Luzhkov may sign his resignation letter on his return from vacation, Kommersant business daily said on Friday, referring to sources close to Moscow City Hall.
